How to compress an image

  1. 1

Add JPG, PNG, or WebP files

A single image or a batch. AVIF and HEIC have their own converters.

  2. 2

    Pick a format and strength

Use the Photo or Smaller presets, or set quality, PNG colors, and a maximum edge yourself.

  3. 3

    Check the savings and download

Keep the result only if it is actually smaller and still looks right. Download a ZIP for batches.

Good to know

Photos get smaller when you lower JPG or WebP quality, or when you cap the longest side. PNG is already lossless, so the way to shrink it here is to reduce the number of colors, or to export a JPG or WebP instead.

The page shows the original size, the new size, and the percentage saved. If a setting makes the file larger, it says so and still lets you download. Metadata is not copied into the compressed file.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my PNG not get smaller?

A lossless PNG is hard to shrink without changing it. Choose 256 colors, or switch the output to WebP or JPG for a real reduction on photos.

Will compression upload my pictures?

No. Quality changes are done on a canvas in your browser.

Can I limit the pixel size too?

Yes. Set “Longest side” and anything larger is scaled down before it is saved. Leave it blank to keep the current dimensions.

What if the new file is larger?

The result says it is larger. Try a lower quality, a smaller longest side, or WebP. You can still download the file.
